making notes

South Australia’s Barossa has a global reputation for producing some of Australia’s and the world’s greatest full bodied red wines.  Sourced from premium 50-70 year old vines.  Hand picked and each vineyard kept separate until blending. Bunch sorted in the vineyard, destemmed and crushed.  Closed top stainless steel fermenter ‘uninocculated’ in a winery that has inoculated ferments alongside. 10-14 days on skins and then 48 hours tank settling before racked to older oak French hogsheads for 14 months. The Artisan Barossa Valley Mataro 2017 is an extraordinary example of how exceptional Barossa and this red variety can be.

Colour

Deep dark red with vibrant purple hue

Nose

The aromas are fresh and youthful with dark plums and attractive spicy notes

Palate

The palate is lively with rich silky tannins making for a luscious mouthfeel.  Dark fruits, peppery complexity and abundant spice make this an excellent example of the possibilities of Mataro from the Barossa Valley.  Cellar potential of 7+ years.

Reviews

92 points (4.5 Stars) – Sam Kim, Wine Orbit

Beautifully ripe and fragrant, the inviting bouquet shows strawberry tart, plum, game, black olive and toasted almond characters with a hint of leather complexity. The palate is supple and silky, offering lovely fruit weight together with complex savoury nuances, finishing long and smooth. At its best: now to 2025.

Mataro is a variety we are starting to see more of, this is a good example of what we can produce in Australia. Plum, blackberry, mint along with hints of smokiness add to this complex bouquet. This leads to the complex but well balanced palate. Spicy on the front with chalky tannins balanced by sweet dark fruits and clean acid. Finishes with a good length. Will benefit from some time in the cellar 3+ years.
