making Notes

This is a very special expression of Barossa Valley Shiraz, arguably Australian wine’s most recognisable region and varietal. This parcel was sourced from 30 year old own rootstock vines of a Light Pass vineyard. The parcel was hand picked and bunch sorted before destemming and then open fermented. It was cold soaked and then spent 8 days on skins followed by 18 months in 20% new French Oak and 5% American oak barriques. The remainder was matured in 2-4 year old seasoned barrels. This wine is an excellent example of the outstanding results possible, when an allegiance between growers and winemakers creates their best expression of the varietal and vintage. Cellar potential of another 15+ years.

Shoulder to shoulder we stand with pride, love and unity
Erik de Haart survived one of Australia’s worst tragedies - the 2002 Bali bombings. The heartbreaking loss of his Coogee Dolphins team mates and the horrendous aftermath of the attack will never leave him. Whilst his courageous and selfless efforts on that terrible night saved many lives, Erik personally retreated from the hero tag that everyone else believed he deserved. After many years of suffering in silence, Erik has displayed even more courage to bring attention to one of our society’s most insidious dangers – the mental anguish he suffers through the guilt of those he couldn’t save. Erik’s powerful story will continue to assist other people in our community to seek assistance with their own problems. Whilst we will never know the ever present emotional pain he endures, we stand shoulder to shoulder with Erik in pride, love and unity.

96 points (5 Stars) – Sam Kim, Wine Orbit This is wonderfully ripe and richly expressed on the nose showing dark fruit intensity together with vanillin oak, fragrant spice, game and thyme characters, leading to a powerfully expressed palate that’s weighty and mouthfilling. It’s opulent and splendidly framed by fine, grainy tannins, making it firmly structured and immediately appealing at the same time. At its best: now to 2033.
95 points (5 Stars) – Leo Daly, Wine Matrix Rich purple and bold red in the glass. Herbaceous and mint flavours together with fragrant spice on the nose. The expected follow up does not disappoint. Lashings of dark chocolate, clove, savoury and spice stewed plums aplenty. Collectively it has a lovely weight and fills the palate with satisfying mouth feel. The silky and grippy tannins, together with a good dollop of 14.5% alcohol, complete a wonderful crescendo to this well made Barossa Shiraz. Drinking well now but will just get better in the next 10 years.
94 points (5 Stars) – Stephen Read, Wine Matrix As soon as you nose this wine you are greeted with powerfully aromas of dark berry’s, blackcurrant and mulberry, spice, herbaceous notes and cedary oak. The palate delivers all and more with multilayered sweet berry fruit, soft tannins, integrated oak, full bodied and true to its region. Enjoy now or cellar for 10+ years.
93 points (4 Stars) – Huon Hooke, The Real Review Deepish red/purple colour and a curiously vegetal, canned-corn overtone to the bouquet. The vegetable touch is possibly cooler-grown or perhaps due in part to whole-bunch fermentation. It’s quite Rhône-ish in that way. Fruit-sweet, soft-textured palate, beautifully balanced and long. Spices and red fruits to taste. A different style of Barossa shiraz, and very worthy. Drink 2020-2030.
